Workshop alum Nancy Crase featured in Arizona Highways

Nancy Crase, who attended both the Sports and Summit Workshops, is the author of a light-painted picture in the March issue of Arizona Highways. Dave Black’s hands-on teaching of the light painting technique led Nancy to photograph the flower in the picture with that technique and Jeff Kida, the photo editor of the magazine, told of Dave’s influence in making the picture. But there is one thing that Dave probably didn’t teach Nancy — to use a new “light source” for her light painting. You see, for a light, she used her iPhone.

2010 Superbowl

Two Sports Workshop alums both made the defining picture from the 2010 SuperBowl. Sports Illustrated’s Heinz Kluetmeier, who has instructed as many of the workshops over the years, and Getty Image’s Jed Jacobsohn, who attended the workshop in Los Angeles, were next to each other and made almost identical pictures. The Saint’s Tracy Porter who intercepted the fourth quarter Peyton Manning pass for the game-winning touchdown, is running into the end zone with two teammates celebrating — with Manning laying on the ground behind, watching the championship disappear. Jacobsohn’s picture made front pages across the country and Kluetmeier’s is featured on SI.com.

Light painting with the Nikon D3 in Jackson Hole

The latest issue of “Jackson Hole” magazine, an elegant quarterly publication that goes all over the nation to frequent visitors to Jackson Hole, features a cover by chief photographer Brad Boner. (The magazine is an offshoot of the Jackson Hole News&Guide, their award-winning newspaper in Jackson.)   And on the contents page, Brad tells how he learned how to make the picture from attending a session with Dave Black in light painting at the fall Photography at the Summit Workshop.  Then with the help of Nikon’s Bill Pekala, used a D3 to capture all the details of the Milky Way and the entire northern sky.  A little moonlight lighted the mountains and to keep the balance, Brad “painted” the famed Moulton barn with —  a Maglite!  The stunning picture could never been made before the D3 high ISO capabilities with no noise.  Thus, the quality.

Workshop alum Todd Heisler producing strong work for the NY Times

When Todd Heisler attended Photography at the Summit, he took a creative leap and instead of photographing wildlife or the mountains, he did a photo essay on light bulbs.  Where they were, where they burned and how they fit into the very Western scene of Jackson Hole.  It was very unusual — and good.  Now a staff photographer for the New York Times, they devoted an entire page of his color pictures in the Sunday June 21 issue showcasing his very creative pictures from the Venice Biennale.  Oh yes, in the meantime before he went to the Times, he won the Pulitzer Prize in photography while on the staff of the now-departed Rocky Mountain News.

The September issue of Arizona Highways magazine is largely Summit driven. The two major portfolios of stunning pictures from Arizona are the work of two Summit Workshop regulars. Jack Dykinga, joining us next month for Fall Photography at the Summit, shows his fondness for film in an issue that compares digital with traditional film. And in a big departure for the magazine, the cover story with 14 pages inside are all stunning black and white – the work of Tucson-based photographer Joel Grimes who attended both Summit and Sports Photography Workshops over the years.
