Mangelsen, Jack Dykinga and Patricio Robles Gil were key team members in April of a RAVE project (Rapid Assessment Visual Expedition) documenting one of the last remaining cloud forrests in Mexico, the Biospere Reserve of El Triunfo. Workshop regulars were major contributors to the book, "Where Valor Rests," published in May and featured in excerpts of National Geographic and American Photo magazine’s cover story, both in the June issues. The book salutes Arlington National Cemetery and includes spectacular panoramic pictures from Bruce Dale, light-painting pictures by Dave Black, behind-the-scenes pictures of the honor guard by David Alan Harvey, landscapes by Dick Durrance II and composites photographs by James Balog. The whole project and book was organized by Rich Clarkson with military laison, Lt. Col. Michael Edrington, a two-time attendee at the Summit Workshops. The project also culminated in an exhibition ceremony at Arlington May 18 attended by many Washington officials including the secretaries of the Army and Air Force.

It was a big night for the National Geographic magazine in New York May 1 at the National Magazine Awards dinner. Not only did the Geographic win the top award for photography, they also took the sweepstakes top prize, General Excellence, more than 2 million circulation. The awards really pay tribute to the evolution editor Chris Johns has brought in only three years in the top spot. And the photography award brings credit to David Griffin, their senior editor in charge of photography. Johns has been a faculty member of the Summit Workshops several times and Griffin puts in his first time on the faculty in this spring’s Digital Photography at the Summit.
