News of Students and Faculty - Winter 2007

MARYANNE GOLON moved up to director of photography of Time magazine as of January 1. She follows Michelle Stephenson who retired. Maryanne is a workshop regular, who will be returning to the Summit in 2007 and had been Time's picture editor -- the No. 2 job on the picture department -- the past ten years. Her influence is now seen in the redesigned Time magazine which will include pages for picture essays as well as individual pictures. This in addition to the galleries on the Time website.

TERRY HALBERT is the featured photographer at the Eighth Street Center in Buhl, Idaho with the opening of his project, "Eyewitness America, A National Park Odyssey." Terry, who attended the Summit in 2004 along with wife, Stevie, quit their jobs , loaded their belongings into the Volkswagon EuroVan, and spent a year traveling through the national parks to produce this exhibition which will be featured in a second opening sponsored by the National Park Trust January 27. Terry will also conduct three two-day workshops, "Introduction to Photography" at the center.

TODD HEISLER, fresh from his Pulitzer Prize in 2006 has joined the staff of The New York Times. Todd's Pulitzer, while a staff photographer at The Rocky Mountain News, came for "Final Salute," coverage of a Marine major whose task it was to preside over the services for fallen Marines from the war in Iraq and Afganistan. The writer on the project, Jim Sheeler, which was published in a 24-page special section, also won a Pulitzer for feature writing.

ROBERT SEALE and BRIAN BAHR have both left their sports photography jobs to embark on new careers -- while both continuing to do some freelance work for their previous employers. Seale had spent ten and one-half years on the staff of the Sporting News, traveling all over America covering major sports events but also producing memorable portraits of many of the nation's top athletes. He will be freelancing in order to photograph more than sports. Brian was one of the early staff photographers of Allsport before it was acquired by Getty Images and became one of the most prolific shooters for Getty in recent years. He will continue to do an occasional assignment for Getty while pursueing an MBA degree.

JAMES BALOG, DAVE BLACK, DAVID ALAN HARVEY, DICK DURRANCE II, BRUCE DALE and DAVID BURNETT are among the featured photographers producing essays for an exhibition and book to be published in May that was organized and edited by RICH CLARKSON for Arlington National Cemetery. Called to produce the book, "Where Valor Rests," by LT. COL. MICHAEL EDRINGTON (the military project officer and twice a workshop attendee), Clarkson organized the group along with key military photographers in the Washington area. Published by National Geographic books, it will be excerpted in the June issue of National Geographic magazine where editor-in-chief CHRIS JOHNS and story editor KEN GEIGER presided. And the same month, DAVID SCHONAUER caries a portfolio of pictures in American Photographer magazine. Most of the staff are Summit alumni.

FRANS LANTING's lyrical interpretation of life on earth, with original music composed by famed musician Philip Glass to accompany the pictures, will be performed by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra conducted by Marin Alsop in the Washington/Baltimore area four times in late February. "Life, A Journey Through Time," is one of the most unique presentations with Frans' pictures shown on wide screen behind the symphony in a stunning combination of photography and music. An exhibition and book will also be part of Frans' original photography for the project.

NEIL LEIFER's book, "A Year in Sports," (Abbeyville Press) was published in late 2006 and is attracting attention from its initial publication in Sports Illustrated to Neil's appearances on the "Today" show to Bryant Gumble's "Inside Sports." Neil revisited many of the major sports events he had covered over a lifetime during the 2005 year and the book features his earlier pictures, some 40 years earlier, against the same event a year ago. Leifer will be a special guest lecturer, telling how the project was produced and photographed, at the 2007 Sports Photography Workshop.

SUZY ALLMAN continues to cover major sports events for The New York Times as one of the select freelancers they use regularly in the New York area.

WILLIAM ALBERT ALLARD has been working on a story on American Hunters across the country for the past six months, ranging into all parts of the country -- which started in Montana last fall when he joined the Summit faculty in Jackson Hole. His most recent coverage took him into Arkansas.

TOM MANGELSEN is featured in the February issue of Popular Photography magazine which not only showcases some of his wildlife pictures, but details his 15-gallery network of galleries across the Western US. Tom's home gallery, Images of Nature, is in downtown Jackson but the printing and framing is all handled from his Omaha facility. Tom is recognized worldwide as one of, if not the leading nature and wildlife photographer today. The only workshops he does are the Photography at the Summit Workshops.
